"The stage is not merely the meeting place of all the arts, but is also the return of art to life." - Oscar Wilde
My origin story is a personally funny one... I was tricked into theatre!
I began with violin in elementary school and transitioned to choir in middle school. Singing and dancing was all fun and dandy... until I saw a production of Les Miserables when I was fourteen years old. I innocently thought my school was taking a simple field trip to see a movie that I had lovingly grown up with. Once the live orchestra pierced my ears and the curtains miraculously rose into the heavens to reveal a massive ship being dragged by men, I knew that I was done for.
Hours later I was dehydrated from my tears and frantic to find out how I could do that too. My friend told me of auditions happening at our middle school the following week. I memorized a song, attended the auditions, and booked a large supporting role on my first try... which was exciting until I had not the slightest clue what any of the lingo meant. I patiently waited to learn the music, unsure why we were waiting so long to include what is obviously a hard performance and technical element. Alas, a week before opening night I had enough and asked the cast, "When are we learning the music?" My cast members and peers stared back aghast. "Sarah, this is a play." I merely nodded and smiled back before responding "What is a play?"
It was not until that moment that I discovered the difference between theatre and musical theatre... and my dear, dear friend grinned from across the room, knowing I would not have auditioned if there hadn't been music involved.
And the rest is history! I became addicted to the stage and creating an entire world from a simple piece of paper with ink. I never looked back.
