It wasn't until I enrolled in my dialect course in my undergraduate studies that I realized my mother has an accent. "Mama doesn't have an accent, that's just the way she talked" always ran across my mind when someone would mention it to me. After learning the International Phonetic Alphabet from Professor Kirsten Humer, a student of Patsy Rodenburg, I fell in love with playing with the intricacies of sound and lilt. I have both portrayed characters with accents and have coached them.
