"Ooohh, she's going to be a dancer one day." - my grandmother when I was very young.
Like many other young women, I took ballet lessons as a young child but was unable to continue into my adolencense. At seventeen years old, I received a scholarship from California State Thespians to use toward summer theatre training. I chose to return to ballet.
What drew me to musicals was my choir teachers' attention to the importance of show choir in our curriculum. I loved learning just how big my 5 feet, 3.75 inch self could become on stage. It was magnifying. Playing Amber in Hairspray as my first theatrical lead was such a blessing; I could truly be free on that stage.
At the age of 24, I stumbled across a Country-themed bar in my hometown and discovered just how fun and social Line Dancing could be. This weekly endeavor was my version of a 1950s sockhop and I loved how invested the dancers got.
Now I am taking salsa and bachata lessons to embrace my Cuban heritage and expand my skillset.
